Bible Reading: Parable of the Great Feast
Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!”
Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full’”. Luke 14:15-23 New Living Translation (NLT)
Imagine getting a VIP invitation to the greatest party the world has ever known – a party full of celebs, good food, champagne and live music. Now imagine turning the invitation down. How crazy would you be? How foolish your friends would think you were. In this story, Jesus tells us about a number of guests who did exactly that. They were invited to a great party, they made their excuses and missed out. Similarly, we can make excuses when responding to God’s invitation into his kingdom. We may think that we are too busy with work commitments, family responsibilities or other things, but the truth is we cannot afford to delay or turn his invitation down. It is the most important invitation that we will ever receive. And the best bit? In God’s kingdom, we are all on the VIP guest list.
Thank you that you are always with us. Thank you for inviting us to the best party ever by living life with you. Please help us think of family and friends who don’t yet know you. We pray that they will accept our invitation to Messy Church so that they can find out how amazing you are for themselves. Amen
