[Jesus said] “If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you. I will talk to the Father and he will provide you another Friend so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you will know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you”. John 14:15-17
It is truly moving to think that on the evening when Jesus was about to be arrested, when he must have been deeply troubled by events that were about to happen, he turned his attention to comforting his friends.
What a confusing time for the disciples, because Jesus had told them that he would be leaving them and they would no longer have his physical presence.
Jesus provides them with comforting words: promising them another friend so that they would always have someone with them, someone who would live on in them, the spirit of truth, someone to be with them so they did not have to face the world alone.
Most people will have had some sort of comforter as a child, something that went everywhere, that could never be washed and parents dreaded losing. A child will eventually out grow the need for security in a physical form. The need for comfort remains, the need to feel secure so we do not face the world alone. God provides the ultimate comforter in the Holy Spirit, he can go everywhere with you, he continues to watch over you with God’s love and once within you, he cannot be lost.
